The KX-800 is a 3 Head audiophile cassette deck with bias fine adjustment, logic control and Dolby B. It was released in 1979 and discotinued in 1982. At this time it was the top model of the Kenwood cassete deck line up. It has this beautiful 7oties front with a silver aluminium facia and two VU meters that also include an LED based peak display. The KX-800 combines stunning 70ties esthetics with absolute high end performance that can challenge even Nakamichi models of that time.
This deck received the full service package and many hours went into this deck to have it perform better than its original specs. While the specifications show a Wow and Flutter of 0.09, we are able to bring it down to 0.049. The following work has been carried out on that deck:
- Complete disassembly and inspection of the transport
- Replacement of capstan belt
- Replacement of logic control belt
- Replacement of counter belt
- Cleaning of heads
- Cleaning of capstan with chemical
- Lubrication of capstan with high end Isoflex PDP-65 oil
- Lubrication of opter moving parts with synthetic oil and lithium grease
- Treatment of the original pinch roller with rubber restorer
- Demagentisation of heads and capstan
- Speed calibration
- Playback level calibration
- Frequency check
- Full function test (Playback, Record, FFWD, RWD, …)
This deck had very little use in its life looking at heads and pinch roller. After the execessive service it will be good for another 40 years of service and will please the demanding listener or hardcore tape fan. The front is close to perfect, just one little ding on the top left corner. Hard to find a 3 head deck of that time and design and for that price!
